Welcome Welcome to the 2016 research retreat for the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. We gather not only to celebrate our recent research accomplishments , but also to look forward to the future. The Retreat Planning Committee has worked diligently to plan an outstanding program that reflects the diversity of research in the department – basic science, clinical and translational. We thank them for their time, energy and creativity in putting together this day. The response of the department to this retreat has been amazing. At this writing, we have over 190 preregistered participants. 78 abstracts were submitted and reviewed by the planning committee. From those abstracts twelve were selected for oral presentations ; the remaining abstracts are being presented as posters. We have allocated more time this year for the viewing of posters so that we will all have time to appreciate and discuss the work being presented in poster format. Oral presentations and poster sessions feature contributions by graduate students, residents, fellows and faculty. The final session , " Genotype to Phenotype, " focuses on the use of genotyping, deep sequencing and big-data mining in basic, clinical and translational research. Nancy Cox, Director of the Vanderbilt Genetics Institute, will deliver her keynote presentation to anchor this session. At the end of the day we are going to have a reception with plenty of food and drink. We hope it will be the exclamation point for a great day! As a matter of procedure, we ask you to help us keep the program on schedule. The morning and afternoon breaks are rather short for the large number of participants to move around, use the facilities, and find their way back to their seats. Please help us by watching the time and moving back to your seats at the appropriate times. We have asked our speakers to adhere to the time limitations so that the sessions are not extended.
